Is it a Cracked or Chipped Tooth?

Chipped Tooth

A chipped tooth is less of an issue, it’s usually treated for the aesthetics and functionality because it’s typically in the front of your teeth. Chipped teeth are easily taken care of in one day at your dentist. Your teeth will be cleaned and then a tooth colored filling will be bonded to the chipped areas. Although the restored area will look natural, remember that it is not natural and should be treated with care (just as your original teeth should be cared for). While you’re eating, remember to be especially cautious when eating especially hard foods.

Cracked Tooth

A cracked tooth or teeth occur more commonly in teeth in the back of your mouth, since most of your chewing occurs there. Depending on the severity and depth of the crack, you may require a more invasive procedure such as a root canal, followed by a permanent crown. That is why it is so important to advise your trusted dentist when you notice a crack; even when you have sensitivity near one tooth, it could indicate a deeper problem that is just not detectable at the surface.

Common treatments depend on the depth of the crack

  • Low severity – the least severe crack may need a dental crown to stop and restore damage.
  • Medium severity – if the crack is deeper into the tooth, then a root canal might be necessary along with the protective crown to restore the function of the tooth.
  • Highest severity – if the crack is too deep into the tooth, then a tooth extraction may be the ultimate procedure. Dentists do not remove teeth, unless it is absolutely necessary. If there is alternative to this, your dental professional should advise you for the safest and most natural route. If an extraction is necessary, most likely a dental implant will replace what was your natural tooth.
